Meryl Streep , Julia Roberts, and Hugh Jackman are among the glittering stars who will appear at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada next month. That’s some of the most exciting news from TIFF’s full film line-up which they released on Tuesday.
According to the festival organizers, the Toronto film fest will be hosting 288 features — of which 270 are either world, international, or North American premieres. There will be 70 nations participating in the event with films playing on a total of 34 screens.
Tickets will go on sale September 1 for the 38th annual event which is running from September 5-15.
Festival director Cameron Bailey explained to the Toronto City News about why he was so excited about Meryl Streep’s appearance .
“[S]he hasn’t been to the festival in a long time and she’s terrific in August: Osage County.”
He added that Julia Roberts is in the same movie, which creates double the excitement. It can be rare to find two female A-listers of that importance in the same film.
Streep celebrated her 64th birthday in June. She is of course widely regarded as one of the leading stars of her generation and perhaps of all time.
Most actresses have trouble attracting important roles after age 50 . However, Meryl Streep appears to be unstoppable.
She won her third Oscar for best actress for her role as Margaret Thatcher in 2011’s The Iron Lady. That’s a stunning 30 years after her first win for 1981’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
Now there are even rumors heating up that the 2014 Oscars race for best supporting role will include a battle between Meryl Streep for her role in August: Osage County and Oprah Winfrey for her part in The Butler.
However, that buzz seems a little shaky. Streep actually has a lead, not a support role, in the film. But co-star Julia Roberts may be the front-runner for best lead actress for her role in AOC. Nominating Meryl Streep for the support award could be viewed as a sneaky way to avoid vote-splitting.
