Dana Point, CA – Dolphins made quite a lasting impression on a group of California tourist on a whale watching boat trip. Approximately 1,000 dolphins romped and frolicked in the surf in a rare massive pod movement.

Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari passengers and crew captured the stampeding dolphins on the cell phones and video cameras, WAVY notes. It is unknown what prompted the dolphins to converge in such a large group and make such a drastic migration decision, KSEE Channel 4 News notes.

The sheer speed and mesmerizing agility of the California dolphins captivated the whale boat passengers. The dolphins were porpoising, the term used to describe the creatures when they are engaged in their fasted mode of movement.

Dana Point reportedly has more dolphins per square mile than anywhere else in the United States. Pods of more than 10,000 dolphins are not uncommon in the region throughout the year. An underwater camera on Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari boat allowed the excited passengers to gain an even more unique view of the dolphin stampede.

A typical Captain Dave’s excursion reportedly include sighting of large herds of dolphins, minke whales, and fine whales, according to the company’s website . The business also boasts a stereophonic research hydrophone so dolphin and whale watching passengers can not only snap photos of the mammals but hear them as well.

Captain Dave made a recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss the disentanglement of “Bart” and highlight the problem which allegedly kills nearly 1,000 whales and dolphins every day.
