Justin Bieber’s ‘Heartbreaker’ Wins On iTunes But Will It Win Back Selena Gomez?

Teased for what seemed like a lifetime, Justin Bieber’s latest single “Heartbreaker” finally touched down on Monday, kicking off the first of 10 Journals he’ll be dropping in the same mode over the next 10 weeks.

Currently topping iTunes charts in 63 countries ( and counting), and winning over more than a few critics to boot, shortly after “Heartbreaker’s” midnight premiere Bieber declared on Twitter that the slow-jam was, as he described it,

“A song for people going through a heartbreak—like I was when I wrote it. It means so much to me to be able to share what I was, and still am going through, with my fans. I’m very proud of this song and I hope it gives my fans some insight into my heart.”

Despite the fact the 19-year-old has been linked in recent months with Jacque Rae Pyles, model Ashley Moore, not to mention three waitresses, in most quarters “Heartbreaker” is being seen as Bieber’s public admission that he is not over ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez and wants to try again.

So the question is, if Justin is hoping to restart a relationship with Gomez, will his romantic gambit work?

The teen dreams first sparked romance rumors after they were spotted on a “cuddly” IHOP date in November 2010, finally going public in February 2011 at Vanity Fair’s Oscar party. After enduring years of abuse from some Bieber fans during their relationship amid later cheating rumors — that were denied — the couple first broke up in November 2012.

On November 9, an insider told Us Magazine, “Selena broke up with Justin about a week ago. It’s been a really challenging experience over the last year because of their crazy schedules,” adding, “Selena definitely had some major trust issues with Justin.”

However, since then — multiple nuanced Instagrams, Gomez’s dash to the Canadian’s side during his Believe tour stop in Oslo, outings together in L.A. and Las Vegas, Selena’s Good Morning America declaration that she would “always care about him and protect him,” the sight of Bieber clutching a single red rose at her Malibu birthday bash in July, and reports the pair finished the night off at his Calabasas, Calif., home — reveals the affection that still exists between them.

But, is affection enough to overwrite the problems that existed before?

Bieber refers to his and Gomez’s hectic lifestyles in “Heartbreaker’s” spoken interlude:

“So what I’m really trying to say is, and what I hope you understand / I want us to be together again / Is despite of all the imperfections of who I am I still wanna be your man / I know it hasn’t been easy for us to talk with everyone being around,” before a guts-on-the-floor middle 8 in which the teen singer repeatedly asks :

“I hope you believe in us /…. I wanna know if you feeling the way that I’m feelin’ /… You told me to be careful with your heart (sic).”

While “Heartbreaker” was written some months ago and relations appear to have softened, as far as their careers go the ex-couple have never been busier. Selena kicks off the North American leg of her Stars Dance tour in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, while Justin has just hit South Korea ahead of a show in Seoul on the same day.

With Selena’s tour wrapping in November and Bieber’s in December, it remains be seen if Selena has been moved by Bieber’s public love letter. Factors against point to heightened media interest in their status of their relationship and reports suggesting the “Come and Get It” starlet has no immediate plans to reignite old embers.

That said, who knows? Bieber showed his hand with “Heartbreaker” and if there’s one thing females admire in males, it’s courage.
