Mitt Romney admitted in a recent interview that he was “very upset” over his infamous “47 percent” comments, which some analysts have credited with destroying his chances of being elected president in 2012.
The former Republican presidential candidate told CNN that he has had regrets over the comments after being asked if he spent “a lot of time kicking yourself” after making the controversial remarks.
During the 2012 election, a secret tape leaked by the liberal blog Mother Jones caught Romney speaking at a fundraiser , during which he said that “there are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what” because they are “dependent on government” and “believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing.”
Romney talked a bit about the comments, but seemed to imply that he was more upset with how the media covered the video.
“I was very upset. There were a number of times I said things that didn’t come out right,” Romney said.
He added that “everything you say is being recorded” in today’s world, unlike “25 or 30 years ago.”
“Now and then things don’t come out exactly the way you want them to come out, they don’t sound the way you thought they sounded,” Romney said.
“That’s just the nature of politics today, and you have to get over it and live with it,” he concluded.
Though his sentiments seem to suggest he’s more upset that he was caught making the comments than anything else, he has admitted in previous interviews that the “47 percent” remark was “just completely wrong.”
“Well, clearly in a campaign, with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and question-and-answer sessions, now and then you’re going to say something that doesn’t come out right,” Romney told Fox News last October. “In this case, I said something that’s just completely wrong.”
Do you think that Mitt Romney is still kicking himself over his “47 percent” comments?
