Writer Frank Darabont has signed on to rewrite the script for the upcoming Godzilla remake that’s taking shape over at Legendary Pictures.

Although the second American adaption of the popular Japanese franchise already has a strong director behind the camera, the project now has a seasoned writer on-board to handle scripting duties. Darabont is responsible for penning the screenplays for The Green Mile , The Shawshank Redemption , and, most recently, The Walking Dead .

According to Cinema Blend , Darabont will deliver the final rewrite of the script for director Gareth Edwards. He will be working from a screenplay previously penned by The Seventh Son scribe Max Borenstein.

Frank Darabont’s involvement with the Godzilla remake arrives shortly after news that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was being considered for the lead role in the feature. Unfortunately for fans of the talented actor, Collider is reporting that he has passed on the opportunity to star alongside everyone’s favorite giant lizard.

While Gordon-Levitt’s lack of interest in the project is certainly disappointing, news that Frank Darabont will deliver the final draft of the script is certainly exciting to those familiar with the man’s work. If nothing else, his involvement pretty much ensures that the movie will have a story featuring characters worth caring about.

The Inquisitr previously reported that Gareth Edwards is aiming for something more realistic with his Godzilla remake. Instead of delivering something cheesy, the Monsters director wants to treat the characters and the scenario seriously.

Edwards explained:

“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine, ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.”

Are you looking forward to the Godzilla remake? Are you excited about Frank Darabont’s involvement with the project?
