Last night on Saturday, December 17, Mickey Gall defeated Sage Northcutt at UFC on Fox: VanZant vs. Waterson . Despite the fact it is his third straight victory in UFC, Gall still has a long way to go until he is even considered for a shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship.
According to a written article by the Bleacher Report , it reports that Mickey Gall defeated Sage Northcutt in the co-main event at UFC on Fox: VanZant vs. Waterson by submission with a rear-naked choke in the second round. It was clear that going into the fight, Gall would be the “bad guy” as he went face-to-face against “Super” whose pre-fight highlight reel prior to his first fight featured him as a handsome boy with Hollywood potential, a kind and respectful attitude, and a ton of accomplishments. Despite his accolades, it is safe to say that most people watch Northcutt to see him lose simply because he is considered too much a good guy. And even during his losing fight, Sage Northcutt was humble.
That all changed when Mickey Gall came into the mix. According to a written article by Fox Sports , during an after-fight interview, Gall made it known that Sage Northcutt stepped out of his element when he started trash talking him during the fight . Gall detailed what Northcutt said during the interview.
“First when he [Sage Northcutt] stood up, he was like ‘Get up, get up,’ and I was like ‘I thought your jiu-jitsu was better than mine?’ cause that’s what he had said. Then when I got up I was like ‘Ooh are you tired?’ and he’s like ‘I never get tired!’
“Then when he hit me and cut me he’s like ‘Ooh here’s about to be another one!’ I was like I like Sage with an edge.”
Getting under Sage Northcutt’s skin was a tactic Mickey Gall was hoping to accomplish, and he did with the amount of trash talking Northcutt did. It was enough to throw Northcutt off his game in which he ate a colossal right hand that knocked him down. That was enough for Gall to lock in the rear-naked choke and seal the victory.

Defeating Sage Northcutt makes Mickey Gall two-for-two in stopping the hype train surrounding the opponent he faces. With the exception of his debut fight in UFC, every fight Gall has taken on has been against someone with a lot of hype around them. Back in UFC 203: Miocic vs. Overeem , Gall had the opportunity to be the first opponent to take on former WWE Superstar turned MMA fighter, CM Punk. There was a great divide among MMA fans about Punk’s debut. Many thought he was only given a chance in UFC simply because he has star power, others think he could be like Brock Lesnar, another former WWE Superstar who found success in UFC after he quit professional wrestling.
In less than three minutes, Mickey Gall defeated CM Punk making him tap out to a rear-naked choke in less than three minutes. Overall, it was a dominating win for Gall which in turn was a humiliating and humbling debut for Punk who only threw one punch, the one Gall ducked under to take down Punk, and spent most of his time on the mat.
Even though Mickey Gall is 3-0 in UFC and 4-0 overall in MMA, he is still a ways before he can even compete for rankings for the UFC Welterweight Title. For starters, both CM Punk and Sage Northcutt were technically green just like he was and they were not ranked fighters. If he wants to get in the rankings, he’ll need to fight someone from either 11 to 15. After that, Gall will have to face some of the most talented UFC fighters in the division including Johny Hendricks, Donald Cerrone, Carlos Condit, Demian Maia, and Robbie Lawler before he even thinks of taking on the champion who at this moment is Tyrone Woodley.
Apparently, Mickey Gall is not concentrating on titles for the time being as he continues his pursuit to stop the “hype trains” of certain fighters. He wasted no time calling out who he wants to fight next, Dan Hardy. The former Welterweight contender was sidelined back in 2012 for a heart condition, but now he is making a comeback. Gall wants to be the first roadblock for Hardy’s comeback as shown in post-fight interview after defeating Sage Northcutt.
