On October 5, a Florida doctor reportedly made an unthinkable discovery: a newborn baby girl stuffed into a trash can and covered with paper towels. What’s worse? The infant’s mother stands accused of putting the baby there, and leaving her for dead. As the Sun-Sentinel reports, the horrific situation began after 25-year-old Rubi Ramirez of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was taken to the hospital, purportedly suffering from abdominal pain. According to hospital staff and investigators, the Florida woman gave birth in a hospital restroom at Broward Health Medical Center, abandoning her newborn baby in the trash immediately afterward.
According to Dr. Judson Newman Krosney, the newborn baby girl was discovered alive and relatively well after her mother had been taken to the hospital, allegedly suffering from extreme abdominal pain. Krosney had been assigned to treat Ramirez on October 5, and found his bleeding patient near a gaggle of nurses in the bathroom. It was then that the Florida doctor claims to have asked Rubi Ramirez if she was pregnant — she reportedly said no.
Dr, Krosney is said to have not believed his heavily bleeding patient’s claim, and decided to search the restroom. It was then that he found a newborn baby shoved down beneath a pile of blood-saturated paper towels. The infant was reportedly full term and breathing on its own. After discovering the abandoned newborn in the plastic-lined trash can, the doctor assured that the newborn girl received immediate and necessary medical care.

Since being discovered, buried in the hospital trash earlier this month, the Florida newborn baby has been placed with a foster family by way of the Florida Department of Children and Families. The department is also investigating the birth and abandonment of the newborn. The child’s alleged mother, Rubi Ramirez, was taken into police custody after the infant was discovered concealed in the trash, and reportedly interrogated by police.
According to police interviews connected with the case, Rubi Ramirez initially told investigators that she had been unaware of her pregnancy, adding that her newborn simply fell into the trash. She claimed that she did her due diligence and told healthcare workers at the Florida hospital what had happened after the baby was born.
In later interrogations, Ramirez reportedly confessed to being culpable in connection with the discovery of her baby daughter in the Florida hospital trash. She allegedly admitted that she knew about her pregnancy, and that she’d seen her newborn daughter open her eyes after giving birth and tossing the baby into the trash can and covering her with bloody paper towels. Since the October 5 incident, Rubi Ramirez has reportedly retained legal representation. Her attorney, Jefferey Bloom, claims that his client is the real victim in this case, adding that mental health problems may be a mitigating factor when it comes to criminal charges and potential punishment.
“We believe that there are some mental health issues involved in this case. We are going to investigate further and as the facts develop, we believe it will be shown that Ms. Ramirez is the victim in this case.”
Rubi Ramirez has yet to be released from the hospital following the alleged birth and abandonment of her baby daughter in the Florida hospital trash can. Even so, she has been charged with abuse of a child without great bodily harm and desertion of a child. She is further ordered not to make contact with her baby, who is reportedly thriving in foster care.
Since the October 5 incident and subsequent charges, Florida mom Rubi Ramirez has been granted a small, $5,000 bond by a Broward County judge. The Florida mom has entered a “not guilty” plea by way of her attorney.
