Director Sam Mendes’ James Bond adventure Skyfall is the champion at this weekend’s box office, according to Entertainment Weekly .

The critically acclaimed action flick starring Daniel Craig as the suave and sophisticated British spy has jumped to the top of the US box office with $11 million in receipts. This weekend’s haul helped the film become the highest grossing Sony release of all time.

The DreamWorks Animation adventure Rise of the Guardians landed in the second place position with around $10 million in ticket sales. To date, the film has earned around $61 million. Worldwide box office receipts put the movie’s gross at $151 million, just north of the picture’s $145 million production budget.

The final installment in the Twilight franchise, Breaking Dawn – Part 2 , landed in third place after generating $9.2 million at the weekend box office. According to Box Office Mojo , the movie has earned an impressive $268 million in the United States alone.

Rounding out the top five are director Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed historical drama Lincoln and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi . The films brought in $9.1 million and $8.3 million, respectively.

Unfortunately for Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel, the pair’s soccer-oriented romantic comedy Playing for Keeps failed to capture the attention of moviegoers over the past three days. The film landed in sixth place with a disappointing $6 million in receipts.

Although this weekend’s box office totals didn’t amount to very much, it’s essentially the calm before the storm. Director Peter Jackson’s highly-anticipated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey lands in theaters next week. Fans are expected to turn out for Jackson’s return to Middle Earth in record numbers. Hopefully the movie’s high frame rate won’t make too many moviegoers nauseated in the process.

A complete list of this weekend’s box office totals are below.

1. Skyfall – $11 million 2. Rise of the Guardians – $10.5 million 3. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – $9.2 million 4. Lincoln – $9.1 million 5. Life of Pi – $8.3 million 6. Playing for Keeps – $6 million 7. Wreck-It Ralph – $4.9 million 8. Red Dawn – $4.2 million 9. Flight – $3.1 million 10. Killing Them Softly – $2.7 million
