J.J. Abrams is just one of the many directors that were reportedly attached to the upcoming Star Wars sequel. Although he previously stated he wouldn’t spearhead the project at LucasFilm, the director has once again addressed questions regarding his involvement.

During a recent interview with Empire magazine , the director said he was definitely not attached to direct the highly-anticipated motion picture.

He explained to the publication:

“There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to ‘Star Trek,’ and also just being a fan, I wouldn’t even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I’d rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them.”

Although having the Star Trek Into Darkness filmmaker tackle the Star Wars universe would be akin to heresy, it would definitely be interesting to see what Abrams wold do with George Lucas’ characters.

ABC News reports that, while he doesn’t want to be involved with the sequel, he had nothing but positive things to say about Lucas and LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy. According to Abrams, the franchise is in “good hands.”

The director also said he is such a fan of the Star Wars franchise that he’d rather be in the audience on opening day.

“I’d rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them,” Abrams told Empire .

So who has been chosen by Disney and LucasFilm to tackle Star Wars: Episode VII ? It’s really anybody’s guess at the moment. Although Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn was reportedly attached to helm the project, apparently those reports have fizzled out.

Are you disappointed that J.J. Abrams isn’t going to direct the next Star Wars flick?
