Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have Vampire Diaries fans on the edge of their seats waiting to find out if they’ll reunite for the eighth and final season of the CW series. The pair, who are rumored to have bad blood between them, are reportedly having a hard time coming to an agreement to star on the show together for Season 8.
According to Hall Of Fame Magazine , Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev’s behind the scenes feud may actually leave fans of The Vampire Diaries without the one thing they’ve been waiting for, a reunion between the characters of Damon and Elena .
As many fans know, Somerhalder and Dobrev dated for two years while they worked on the show together. After their split, they continued to be professional with one another until Ian began dating Nina’s former friend, Nikki Reed, whom he later married . The relationship progressed quickly, and it was said that Nikki didn’t like her man filming steamy love scenes with his ex-girlfriend. The drama allegedly is what lead to Nina Dobrev’s decision to quit The Vampire Diaries after Season 6. Her character, Elena Gilbert, was then put into a suspended sleep state that is currently linked with the life of her mortal best friend, Bonnie Bennett.
After it was announced that Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries would officially be the last, fans immediately began demanding that Nina Dobrev return to the series to tie up the loose ends her character left behind, namely Elena’s relationship with Damon. However, if the actress refuses to work with Ian Somerhalder again, that could lead to a big problem for writers.
Reports suggest that because of Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s complicated history Elena may not return to reunite with Damon. Instead, the character could appear to reunite with Damon’s brother, Stefan, whom she originally had a romance with.
Another theory is that Somerhalder’s role will be reduced during Season 8 to make way for Dobrev’s return. Perhaps the two characters will both appear, but time or distance will keep them apart. In Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries , it was revealed that Damon had been possessed by whatever spirit was dwelling in the vault. This spirit also possessed Enzo, and the two were seen going on a murder spree across the country.
If Stefan, Caroline, Matt, and Bonnie can figure out a way to somehow un-link Bonnie’s life with Elena’s sleep state, then Dobrev could return to reprise her role. Elena would then likely be the key to finding Damon and returning him to his former self. The entire season may revolve around this plot, only to see Damon and Elena finally reunite for the very last episode.
While it’s unclear how Season 8 will play out, one thing is for sure. Fans want to see Damon and Elena happy and together by the series finale. If their relationship is not resolved fans will be faced with the fact that the show ended in an unsatisfying way.
As many TV fans know, the series finale of a beloved show is very important. A show that has a huge fanbase and has been on for a significant number of seasons will usually be harshly judged by the way it ends. Shows like Dexter , True Blood , H ow I Met Your Mother, Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Two and a Half Men were all criticized for their final episodes. While shows such as 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Mash, Six Feet Under, and The Sopranos were all beloved by viewers for their series finales.
It seems that Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev’s ability to move past their history could greatly impact The Vampire Diaries Season 8, and the memory of the show that made them famous.
