I have to admit, I was holding out on the “Harlem Shake,” but the video embedded below (the LEGO Avengers version) speaks to my inner geek.
Yes, the “Harlem Shake” fad is kind of annoying . It’s nice to have something that isn’t “Gangnam Style,” but a lot of people seem to be getting tired of the trend quicker than it’s actually dying down.
But the LEGO Avengers video is pretty entertaining to me. Not only is stop-motion animation with LEGOs inherently funny, the clip is actually filled with comic book and film references.
Spastik Chuwawa posted the video partway through February , but it probably got lost in the deluge. After all, YouTube sees 4,000 “Harlem Shake” videos every single day. It’s sitting at roughly 75,000 views right now, so it might have topped off at “sort-of viral” for now.
In any case, I couldn’t help but notice two references to Avengers lore in the clip. One is obvious: The Hulk throwing around Loki during the breakdown portion of the video. That’s a reference to the 2012 film The Avengers , which I really don’t have to tell you. The movie made over $1 billion, so you probably remember the hilarious scene.
Second is Tony Stark’s Iron Man, front and center, swigging a bottle of booze. Sure, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is always operating at a level of 0.14 alcohol content, but his struggle with alcoholism was a long-running thing in the comic books.
And there I go over-analyzing a Harlem Shake video. You can read our definitive guide about the phenomenon here .
