2016 has provided some of the best horror movies of the last several years, and Netflix has just added some new titles from the genre that may have gone overlooked. You know 2016 is a good year for horror movies when several gems can fly under the radar, and Netflix subscribers will be pleased that some of those movies are now available to stream. Some of the new titles on Netflix may pale in comparison to 2016 horror masterpieces like The Witch or Green Room , but they are still solid movies that genre fans are sure to appreciate.
Intruder
A young woman suspects she is being stalked, and she’s right. If you are looking for jump-scare movies then this is not the title for you. But if you appreciate a slow-burn suspenseful tale, then look no further.
They’re Watching
Because found-footage horror movies are oversaturated, it’s easy to miss a good one when it’s released. Thankfully, They’re Watching is a refreshing addition to the subgenre. This horror-comedy is about an American home improvement show that travels to a village in Eastern European, and they soon find out that creating an entertaining show is the least of their problems.
I Am Not a Serial Killer
This new addition to Netflix is one of the most unique horror movies of 2016, and it features strong performances from a great cast: Max Records ( Where the Wild Things Are ), Laura Fraser ( Breaking Bad ), and Christopher Lloyd ( Back to the Future ). The film has very dark elements, but it never loses its adventurous and mysterious tone. The film received a stunning 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, out of 42 critics, and the site provides the synopsis for one of the best movies on Netflix .
“Sixteen-year-old John Wayne Cleaver (Max Records, Where the Wild Things Are) is not a serial killer-but he has all the makings of one. Keeping his homicidal tendencies and morbid obsessions with death and murder in check is a constant struggle that only gets harder when a real serial killer begins terrorizing his sleepy Midwestern town. Now, in order to track down a psychopath and protect those around him, John must unleash his darkest inner demons. Based on the cult novel by Dan Wells, this twisted, genre-bending thriller co-stars Christopher Lloyd and Breaking Bad’s Laura Fraser.”
The only annoying thing about this film is that there seems to be a lot of mumbling; this reporter recommends that you view it with the subtitles feature turned on.
The Wailing
Speaking of subtitles, some of the best horror movies of 2016 are international films that are a must-watch for genre fans — The Wailing is one of those films. For those who refuse to watch a picture because of subtitles, then you are really missing out. Time Out describes why this is one of the best horror movies of 2016 .
“The words ‘epic’ and ‘horror movie’ feel wrong together somehow. Scary movies are supposed to provide short, sharp shocks, not slow-burn drama that unfolds over two-and-a-half hours. But that’s not only the horror film rule this Korean demon-ghost-possession-cop-folklore-zombie comedy-thriller breaks. In the hands of director Na Hong-jin ‘The Wailing’ is a true one-off, at once sweet and mournful, goofy and gruesome, compellingly strange and comfortingly familiar.”
Shelley
A couple who lives in seclusion are unable to conceive a child, so their housekeeper agrees to be their surrogate — that was a mistake. Another international delight, Shelley is made in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby , but it still stands on its own.
Let’s Be Evil
If you’re not a fan of horror movies that focus on creepy children or of first-person video games, then you will most likely hate this film. But if you enjoy the aforementioned, then you will find this IFC Midnight feature to be entertaining.
