As strange as it may sound, apparently the folks at CBS are keen on developing medical drama based on The Wizard of Oz. If this were April 1, then everyone would have good reason to be skeptical.
However, it would appear that the network is extremely interested in putting together a hospital-based series that brings several of the iconic characters to the Big Apple. According to reports, CBS recently signed on to develop a program known as Dorothy.
Instead of filling the proposed drama with Tin Men and cowardly lions, the broadcaster is using the classic tale as inspiration for the new series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show is described as “a medical soap based in New York City, inspired by the characters and themes immortalized in The Wizard of Oz.”
Ghost Whisperer alum Emily Fox will provide the script for the pilot and serve as producer on Dorothy. Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman, both of whom worked on Elementary, will executive produce the new CBS drama. No word yet when the series is expected to arrive.
CBS isn’t the only network using author L. Frank Baum’s classic tale as inspiration for a new series. The Inquisitr previously reported that SyFy is looking to put together Warriors Of Oz at some point in the near future. The mini-series is from the mind of Wanted and Nightwatch director Timur Bekmambetov.
Here’s how SyFy is officially describing the project:
A warrior from present day Earth [who] is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land.
It’s unclear when the cable network intends to have its own Oz-inspired series ready to roll. If that’s not enough to keep you satisfied, then keep you eyes peeled for the follow-up to director Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful . That project should be right around the corner.
What do you think about CBS developing a Wizard of Oz-inspired medical drama?
