The Undertaker’s status for Wrestlemania 33 remains unconfirmed. The WWE Universe is still waiting for a bit of information that will confirm that The Deadman will appear next year in Orlando for one more match, or if his Hell in a Cell match with Shane McMahon at Wrestlemania 32 earlier this year is the last time we’ll see The Undertaker inside a WWE ring. The recent rumors about an injury aren’t helping in that regard.
Speculation is all the WWE Universe has had to chew on for the last six months. There have been plenty of rumors about Undertaker’s return to WWE programming, but it seems the earliest we’ll know about what WWE has planned for him will not be official until The Road to Wrestlemania . If Undertaker returned to WWE unannounced, the wrestling world would go into a frenzy, but we have an idea of when to expect him.
The expectation based on the rumors is that The Undertaker will make his return to WWE programming during the WWE Royal Rumbl e PPV that was recently announced to be taking place in San Antonio this year in the Alamodome. It’ll be as good a place as any for the return of The Deadman, but his reemergence on WWE television is just the first important step. The reveal of his Wrestlemania opponent is just as important.
Ideally, both of those things will be revealed to the WWE Universe simultaneously. The problem is there are still so many different options for his next opponent at Wrestlemania . For example, Finn Balor has thrown his name into the hat of opponents for Undertaker. The WWE Universe hasn’t given up on the possibility of finally seeing Sting vs. The Undertaker on the grandest stage of them all. Despite the endless possibilities for what could be The Phenom’s final match of his career, the most obvious choice was and is John Cena.
John Cena vs. The Undertaker should have happened at Wrestlemania 32 in Dallas, but it wasn’t meant to be. There is a strong indication that WWE officials are going to want to book the match for Orlando next year. A match between these two legends would be a historic bout with an epic atmosphere that could serve as the final match of The Undertaker’s career. On paper, John Cena is the best option for that situation.
However, it’s been rumored that WWE wants Cena to focus on his quest to become the sixteen time WWE Champion on the grandest stage of them all. That would leave the role of Undertaker’s opponent open, and WWE is thinking that the current WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens is the right guy to fill that spot.
There is a new report claiming that Kevin Owens is the frontrunner to face The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 33 next year in Orlando. The idea is Owens would lose the WWE Universal Championship before the WWE Royal Rumbl e event in January and then enter into a feud with The Deadman.
A lot of people are going to be disappointed by WWE’s choice, but there are a lot of positives about Owens challenging The Undertaker on the grandest stage of them all. First and foremost, Kevin Owens is the top heel on Raw, which makes him a great foil to Undertaker because his brash arrogance will create a strong dynamic with the quiet respect that The Deadman commands from the WWE Universe.
Not only that, but The Undertaker will be able to help elevate another WWE Superstar on the biggest stage that WWE has to offer. Many people regard The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania match to be as important as a WWE title match. That’s a big step to establish Owens as a top guy in WWE. A successful night for him in Orlando means a lot more to WWE’s future than John Cena getting an obvious win over The Undertaker.
