The president of Eidos recently said the Xbox 720 will block used games.
Rumors have been swirling for months that Microsoft’s new console wouldn’t support used games. Although everything should be considered pure speculation until the company makes an official announcement, it’s often hard to ignore some of the reports that are starting to surface.
According to Cinema Blend , Eidos president Ian Livingstone said during a recent interview that the Xbox 720 would not support used video games. To make matters worse, the machine will require an “always on” internet connection for DRM.
Livingstone explained to MCV India :
“Broadband speed globally isn’t at a level that justifies digital-only. With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an Internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on another.”
This isn’t the first time players have heard that Microsoft’s new machine wouldn’t support previously-owned games. A report from Edge earlier this month also outlined some of these features, including the “always on” internet connection.
Until Microsoft confirms or denies these rumors, it’s always best to take them with a grain of salt. Internet rumors often turn out to be just that: rumors.
The Inquisitr previously reported that Sony’s forthcoming PS4 will support used video games. Shortly after the reveal last week, Sony Worldwide President Shuhei Yoshida said that the new console would allow folks to purchase and play used discs.
He explained:
“Yes. That’s the general expectation by consumer. They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation. So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?”
It’s currently unknown when Microsoft plans to unveil the Xbox 720 . When the company finally puts together a press conference about the machine, they will have plenty of rumors to address.
