Carrie Underwood is hurting for her home state of Oklahoma after an EF-5 tornado tore through the town of Moore, devastating the community earlier this week. In response, the country singer has proven that (provided you have the means) sometimes the best thing you can do to help out is to write a check.
Underwood has earmarked a whopping $1 million for disaster relief in the state of Oklahoma, which will go a long way toward healing a community torn asunder by natural disaster.
“I have watched the devastation in my home state of Oklahoma over the past several days with great sadness,” Underwood said in a statement.
“With the help of my fans who attended my concerts over the past year, we can offer the Red Cross a little extra help in comforting those affected by the recent tornados,” the 30-year-old singer said.
Underwood was born in Muskogee and grew up a farm girl in Checotah.
A rep for the Red Cross issued a response to Underwood’s statement, applauding her generosity.
“The impact of the tornados in Oklahoma and the Midwest was devastating, and the road to recovery will be long for many families.
“Through the generosity of Carrie, the American Red Cross can quickly respond with shelter, food and comfort now, and with lasting help as they move toward recovery.
Underwood’s $1 million will be nice and cozy alongside another $1 million donated by NBA star Kevin Durant, a forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Singer Blake Shelton is also contributing to the relief efforts by holding a benefit concert to help those devastated by the Oklahoma tornado.
Shelton’s “Healing in the Heartland” concert will be held on May 29 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. It will be televised live by NBC.
