Son Of God , a film about Jesus Christ is coming to theaters in 2014, according to an announcement made by 20th Century Fox.
Based on the History Channel’s hit series, The Bible , the film will open on February 28, 2014.
Son Of God will follow the story of Jesus, who will be played by the same actor that portrayed him in the miniseries, Diogo Morgado , from his birth, to his crucifixion, and resurrection.
History Channel lived up to its name making history, when it debuted the 10 episode miniseries produced by the husband and wife team, Mark Burnett ( Survivor ) and Roma Downey.
The miniseries related different books in the Bible focusing on some of the best known characters of the Old and New Testament, leading to the death of Jesus and his resurrection.
Viewers flocked to watch this epic show to the tune of 15 million for each of the ten episodes, breaking records and earning the show three Emmy nominations.
Son Of God will include scenes shown on the series as well as new footage that did not make it to our TV screens.
“We are very excited to be working with 20th Century Fox to release Son of God as a major motion picture,” said Downey and Burnett in a statement. “We responded to an overwhelming demand for the greatest story ever told to be seen as a shared experience on the big screen. The result is a beautiful stand-alone movie. It’s the story of Jesus for a whole new generation.”
Mark Burnett said he considered The Bible the most important project he has undertaken. He has not only produced Survivor , but other shows such as The Voice, 2012 People’s Choice Awards , and The 63rd Primetime Emmys .
The press release from 20th Century Fox states that Son Of God is “an experience created to be shared among families and communities across the US.”
