Banksy’s Identity Accidentally Revealed?
Banksy’s identity was reportedly revealed in New York after he was caught on camera outside one of his pieces.
Many publications have now started to speculate that the man pictured is in fact the elusive graffiti artist, who is currently working in the city for a month.
The man who is allegedly Banksy was seen helping to fix a “moving picture,” which had been loaded onto a truck that had broken down in Manhattan.
Of course, it is highly unlikely that Banksy will actually confirm or deny whether the man pictured is actually him or not. Banksy, who is known to hail from Bristol, England, is believed to be either Robin Gunningham or Robin Banks.
Discussing his current residency in New York, Banksy confirmed in a recent interview with the Village Voice that his projects had been delayed by the building work in the city.
Banksy commented, “I returned to find most of the empty lots I planned to use have got condos built on them already. I chose it for the high foot traffic and the amount of hiding paces. Maybe I should be somewhere more relevant, like Beijing or Moscow, but the pizza isn’t as good.”
He even suggested that he might abandon urban art, which would be understandable considering that his pieces are repeatedly being vandalised.
Banksy stated in the same interview, “I started painting on the street because it was the only venue that would give me a show. Now I have to keep painting on the street to prove to myself it wasn’t a cynical plan.
He went on to add, “Commercial success is a mark of failure for a graffiti artist. We’re not supposed to be embraced in that way. When graffiti isn’t criminal, it loses most of its innocence.”
Banksy is one of the most notorious names in art, and his work has earned him millions of dollars, with numerous celebrities, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, having bought his work.
