Mexican Monster Truck Accident: 13 Spectators Killed, 80 Injured
In a horrific truck accident at a show in Chihuahua, Mexico, 13 people were killed and dozens injured, some critically. Officials and spectators at the event said the driver lost control of the monster truck while jumping it over a pile of cars.
Other eyewitnesses at the “Extreme Aeroshow” said they saw the driver of the truck hit his head on the interior of the vehicle,launching it into the crowd on the grandstand. Jesus Manuel Ibarra, who was in the crowd at the time of the accident said:
“I fell over, and when I turned around I saw the tire very close. It hit me and threw me to the other side.”
Among the dead was at least one child and 46 people remain hospitilized today and are being treated for their injuries. The hospitals treating the sick have made an urgent appeal for people to come forward to donate blood.
Another spectator, Daniel Dominguez, said he was watching the monster truck show when the accident occurred. He reported: “The driver hit his head and his helmet flew off. The truck came directly at where we were.”
Dominguez’s family also ended up in hospital. His mother was treated for minor injuries while his 11-year-old sister needed to undergo surgery to her legs. The show was cancelled straight after the terrible accident which took place on the second of the three-day extreme show.
While the injured are being treating in hospital, the police in Mexico have opened a full investigation into the monster truck accident in order to ascertain what went wrong and what caused the fatal incident.
