Brooke Shields Divorce: ‘Be Happy We Don’t Have Children’ Said Agassi
Brooke Shields was divorced from Andre Agassi 14 years ago but she remembers it as if it were yesterday.
Shields,48, was co-hosting the Today Show with Willie Geist on October 2 when she came out with an extremely revealing personal memory during a section of the show called “Dealing With Divorce: How to Move On.”
She was speaking with celebrity lawyer Laura Wasser, who worked with Kim Kardashian, and is the author of “It Doesn’t Have To be That Way: How To Divorce Without Destroying Your Family Or Bankrupting Yourself.”
Shields was referring to her own divorce when she started talking about the aspect of children of divorce. “I am divorced,” Shields said “And mine was very quick and relatively easy but it’s a very interesting thing because he – quote, unquote – did say to me, ‘Be happy that we don’t have children or I would not have made this easy for you.’ ”
And then she added, laughingly “And therein lies why I’m not there anymore.”
Brooke Shields, who was once a child model, married Andre Agassi in April 1997; they divorced just before their two-year wedding anniversary. Agassi wrote the autobiography “Open” in 2009, in which he spoke about his failed marriage.
During the course of an interview with the Today Show in November 2009 to promote the book, Agassi explained, “I think at that time in my life I couldn’t be married to anyone. I think timing is really important. You need in a marriage, two people who understand themselves… and I certainly didn’t understand myself.”
Brooke Shields was remarried in 2001 to television writer Chris Henchy. They have two daughters together, Rowan, 10, and Grier, 7.
