Elizabeth Olsen has been cast as Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon’s upcoming Avengers 2: Age of Ultron.
News of the casting call was revealed by actor Samuel L Jackson. Saoirse Ronan was originally offered the part but declined the offer.
Jackson sat down with the Wall Street Journal to discuss his cameo in the new TV show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D when he revealed the following details:
“I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.”
Olsen is the younger sister of fashionista’s Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Before her turn as Scarlet Witch she played in the horror film Silent House and had roles in the indie films Martha Marcy May and Marlene and the film Liberal Arts.
Given the success of the first Avengers film the movie will no doubt be the biggest undertaking yet for the young star.
Scarlet Witch’s twin brother Quicksilver was recently tied to Kick-Ass actor Aaron-Taylor Johnson, although that casting role has not yet been confirmed.
Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is still in the early stages of production and won’t hit theaters until May 1, 2014. Filming is slated to begin in March 2014.
In the meantime director and writer Joss Whedon has remained quite about any of the sequels details. Eight months ago Whedon told MTV News that he was hard at work and well into the sequels script. At the time Whedon proclaimed:
“Don’t go bigger; go deeper. All of these people have met, so you have that out of the way. Now you can spend your time just digging in – and by digging in, I mean with a scalpel, to cause pain.”
Do you think Elizabeth Olsen is a good choice to play Scarlet Witch?
