‘Rocky’ Broadway Opening: Sylvester Stallone To Produce
The new Rocky Broadway opening has nothing to do with the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sylvester Stallone is producing a musical based on his classic film about the boxer.
You read that right. Sylvester Stallone is taking the character he made famous in the 1976 film and turning the story into a Broadway show starting next March. Now before we jump to conclusions and call it an instant failure, this wouldn’t be the first time Sylvester Stallone has done something really unusual that turned out to be a huge success.
Is anybody thinking of The Expendables yet?
Yes, Sylvester Stallone created a film that basically stuck a bunch of big Hollywood action stars together in a movie that seemed a lot like the kind of films we left behind in the 90s, and now it’s on its second sequel.
In other words, we shouldn’t discount Rocky as a musical just yet, as “Sly” has surprised us before. In fact, the Rocky musical has already had a degree of success in Hamburg, Germany.
The Rocky Broadway opening will feature big name Broadway performers such as Andy Karl in the title role. Andy Karl (Legally Blonde) comes straight off a choice role in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Newcomer Margo Seibert will play the role of the painfully shy Adrian, Rocky Balboa’s love interest. Veteran Alex Timbers (The Producers, Hairspray, and Here Lies Love) is directing this musical which takes place partially in a regulation boxing ring.
We should just be grateful that Sylvester Stallone didn’t decide to reprise his role and try to sing. Even if he could pull it off, it would just look comical to see him doing it.
The production cost of the Rocky musical is set to be $15 million, which is probably chump change for the Demolition Man star. The stateside Rocky Broadway opening is set to take place on March 13, 2014.
