Wendy Davis Running For Texas Governor [Report]
Wendy Davis’s future likely includes a 2014 bid for Texas governor. Several sources, including The Associated Press, say that Davis will announce her candidacy on October 3.
Davis is currently a Democrat in the Texas state senate. She launched herself into the national spotlight earlier this summer when she filibustered a restrictive abortion bill in the state.
ABC News notes that the AP cited two Democrats who are close to Davis. A gubernatorial campaign from Davis was expected, though she has held off on making her decision public.
However, the Democrat famous for wearing pink running shoes while standing up against abortion restrictions teased an announcement on her Twitter account.
Wendy Davis wrote on September 26, “A week from today, I’m announcing something big. Can you chip in now to show the strength of our grassroots network? http://bit.ly/19K4lck.” She posted two other updates, saying she will “announce my future plans at the same place where I received my high school diploma.”
Should the rumors about Davis hold true, the Texas Democrat faces stiff competition, notes The Los Angeles Times. No Democrat has won in Texas in more than 20 years. Davis also hinted in August that she was considering a run for governor. She has raised more than $1 million in recent months while traveling the country building a nationwide support network.
Even with a large following, Wendy Davis would likely be the underdog in the race for Texas governor. The front-runner to succeed Republican Governor Rick Perry is Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott. He has already raised $20 million toward the campaign.
Tom Pauken, a former state party chairman, is also in the running for the Republican primary. He has raised only a fraction of the money Abbott has, but has a following in the Tea Party part of the GOP.
Even with a smaller following, Wendy Davis stands a chance of being the governor of Texas should she decide to run.
