‘Boardwalk Empire’ Renewed For Fifth Season
HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fifth season.
“Thanks to Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Howard Korder and their stellar team, Boardwalk Empire remains in a class by itself,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said. “I look forward to another electrifying season of this impeccably crafted series.”
According to TV by the Numbers, Boardwalk Empire is one of the network’s most-watched original programs, with an average gross audience of 7.5 million viewers this season. The fourth season premiered September 8, drawing 2.4 million viewers, down from the season three premiere which drew 2.9 million viewers. Including the 11 pm replay, the fourth season premiere attracted a total viewership of 3.2 million.
Boardwalk Empire premiered on September 19, 2010, drawing 4.81 million. The pilot episode, which was directed by Martin Scorsese, cost $18 million to make and was the most expensive pilot episode in television history. The following year, the series was nominated for 18 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Steve Buscemi), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Kelly Macdonald).
At the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards last Sunday, the series took home five awards, the most of any series this year. The awards included Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Bobby Cannavale), Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour, and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series.
Last month, Paz de la Huerta said she wanted back on the series after reports that she was fired due to her public antics.
De la Huerta said, “I had a great experience on Boardwalk Empire. I’m still close with the producers. Terry [Terence Winter] always says it’s possible for me to come back.”
De la Huerta’s character, Lucy Danziger, was last seen at the end of season two. HBO didn’t renew her contract, and never offered a reason for why, fueling speculation that she had been fired.
