Brittany Davila has never let her Down syndrome slow her down or get in the way of her love for cheerleading.
Brittany, 16, has been cheerleading since she was in junior high according to MSN Now .
ABC News reported that as a Freshmen at Deer Park High School , Brittany is an honorary member of the school’s cheerleading team.
The report goes on to explain that as an honorary member, Brittany doesn’t go to competitions or take part in stunts.
Brittany has so far been very happy with her place on the squad, but now her mom, Buffy Davila, claims that the school wont let her cheer during games, saying she is a liability.
“She doesn’t understand why they’re telling her she can’t do it,” Buffy told ABC affiliate KTRK . “I don’t know how to explain it to her.”
She continued on to say that her daughter, Brittany Davila, cheered at one volleyball game, “Then yesterday we went and it was a different coach, and now she can’t do it because it’s a liability.”
According to King5.com, Ruben Davila, Brittany’s father, stated “If it’s a liability for her why wouldn’t it be for anyone else,”
KTRX continued on to report that the Deer Park school district posted the following on their website:
“Yesterday, members of the local news media reported about an honorary cheerleader at Deer Park High School. It’s important to note that there is always more than one side to any story….. Thankfully, our cheer sponsors requested to have a meeting with the parents and District representatives….. At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to work together to resolve whatever issues remain.
According to King5.com, with all the rumors continuing to swirl around that Brittany was kicked off the squad, spokesman Matt Lucas issued a brief written statement saying that Brittany Davila was “STILL an honorary member of the squad, and we are honored to have her involved in the program.”
