With part of the college football playoff committee already set, BCS/College Football Playoff management announced Wednesday that the rest of the committee could be in place by the end of the season.
College football has been working on a playoff system after years of complaints aimed toward the current ranking system. A number of schools and analysts want a playoff system to help even out a playing field heavily ruled by the SEC in the rankings.
A proper playoff system would allow a less notable, but still ranked team, prove they can play with high ranked teams like Alabama.
Part of creating a playoff system is creating a playoff selection committee. According to Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney, “we’re not all that far away.”
In total, the college football playoff committee will consist of 12 to 18 members, and be roughly modeled off the current college basketball committee. Members will be chosen from a varied set of backgrounds including; former athletes, former players, former coaches, and even reporters.
Potential committee members have been asked to stay quiet until a formal announcement is made.
The new college football playoff system will feature four teams chosen by the committee as the best in the nation. It will replace the current polling system used by college football.
Because college football is getting such a huge makeover next season, the league is being very careful with who it asks to be a part of the selection committee. BCS/CFP executive director Bill Hancock explained, “We need to know about all these people. We know them. You know them. But we need to know everything we can about them because we don’t want to make any mistakes, and we won’t. These are all people of high integrity.”
We’ll have to wait until next season to see if the new college football playoff committee is less controversial than the current bowl system. Are you excited for the change?
