Benedict Cumberbatch In Negotiations To Play Hamlet On Stage
If you haven’t heard of Benedict Cumberbatch yet, you should have. He is having one heck of a year, with several films out in 2013. Now, word comes that he is in negotiations to play one of Shakespeare’s best loved characters, Hamlet, on stage.
The British actor who stars in Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years A Slave, The Fifth Estate, August: Osage County, and The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, this year will return to his grassroots in London next fall, theDaily Mail reports.
According to the publication, producer Sonia Friedman confirmed she was in “active discussions” with Cumberbatch to play William Shakespeare’s Hamlet in a new production from director Lyndsey Turner.
Benedict Cumberbatch will be following in the steps of some other British colleagues who have played the classic character such as Jude Law, Ben Whishaw, David Tennant, and Mark Rylance.
“We’re at the stage of sorting out schedules concerning him and the director Lyndsey Turner.” Friedman told the Daily Mail.
Benedict Cumberbatch is fast becoming one of the most sought after British actors of our time, because of his natural talents and ability to portray completely different characters from project to project.
Aside from the already mentioned films he appears in, the thesp is working on several upcoming productions such as Little Favour, The Penguins Of Madagascar, Magik, and The Lost City Of Z.
The 37-year-old actor has been quite busy with films and his television hit Sherlock in the past few years after his last stage appearance in Frankenstein in 2011.
Sherlock has just been completed and he is also on his way to start working on the upcoming historical drama The Imitation Game.
Benedict Cumberbatch began his career in theater in London and has appeared in plays at some of the most important venues in England, including Open Air Theater, Almeida Theater, Regent’s Park, and the Royal National Theater.
