‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ Could Hit PS4, Xbox One Next Year
Grand Theft Auto 5 is already available for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. According to analysts, the game could arrive for next-generation systems next year.
Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive’s latest open-world opus is currently breaking records around the world. Reports suggest that the game generated a staggering $800 million in its first day of release. That total stomped the $500 million earned by Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
Although GTA 5 developers haven’t announced the game for Playstation 4 or Xbox One, Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said the title should arrive for next-gen machines in 2014. Releasing the game for other platforms would essentially “help extend the value of the franchise.”
According to the folks at GameSpot, the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 is the largest entertainment launch in the history of mankind. This helped the game generate nearly $1 billion in sales during the first 24 hours.
“We are now modeling 13-14 million units shipped in F2Q. We believe there is still potential upside to our targets. However, given the possibility that sales of ‘GTA’ are front-loaded, we will await further sales data before adjusting our expectations further,” the analyst said.
Regardless of what industry insiders might believe, Grand Theft Auto 5 co-writer and Rockstar VP Dan Houser recently told the Guardian that the game wouldn’t be available on next-generation consoles.
Houser explained:
Of course we’re interested. But no, not in terms of ‘GTA,’ because we’re always working on the current game. We look at the tech at a more practical level: what will be ready for which game that we’re working on further down the line. We don’t have another ‘GTA’ in development, we don’t work on three of these games at a time. That would be phenomenally depressing.
He continued:
So, in terms of ‘GTA,’ no. We get pitched by the hardware manufacturers on what they’re planning to do and our tech guys come up with ideas on how that could be used. Does this influence design decisions? Of course. But we’re not sat there fantasizing about 10 years down the line. We’re so busy with what we’re doing right now.
Do you think Grand Theft Auto 5 will eventually arrive for Playstation 4 and Xbox One?
