Ndamukong Suh Is ‘That Bee’ In Strangest Quote Of NFL Season
Detroit Lions defensive end Ndamukong Suh believes he is “that bee,” in what has to be the strangest quote of the young NFL season.
Suh, coming fresh off a $100,000 fine for taking out Vikings offensive lineman John Sullivan at the knees, was recently asked about cut blocks on defensive players. His quote was one for the ages. Here it is, in full:
“Happens all the time. It’s not going to stop. I look forward to it, look forward to keep making plays down the field. That’s my job and to me it’s just gnats that are in the air that keep going after you and you swat at them and sometimes you hit them, sometimes you don’t, sometimes they just run away, sometimes they come back again. But ultimately, I’m that bee going to find that honey hole, that’s what I go and do.”
Did Ndamukong Suh really just refer to himself as “that bee?” What does that even mean? And who, what, or where is the “honey hole?” We may never truly know.
One thing that is clear from Suh’s quote is, unlike his defensive counterparts in San Francisco, he doesn’t care if offensive lineman attack him low. According to Suh it’s not his job to care.
Maybe he should care more. Last Sunday not only was Suh taken out by a late cut block, 49ers nose tackle Ian Williams broke his ankle taking a low hit. Williams’ season is over. Suh’s could have be over just the same if he was hit lower.
Lions head coach Jim Schwartz added his own two cents on cut blocks:
“For an offensive lineman to do it, it’s legal. He can’t do it from behind, but from the front it’s legal. Is it less of an injury risk? No, but it’s a legal play as opposed to a play that’s penalized so it just is what it is.”
In the NFL’s quest for player safety, the league has shown a clear favoritism towards offensive players. A number of defensive players don’t even know how to tackle anymore without fear of a fine.
One thing’s for sure, that fear won’t stop Ndamukong “that bee” Suh from getting to the “honey hole.”
