‘Independence Day 3’ May Not Happen, Says Roland Emmerich
Independence Day 3 may not happen after all.
ID4 director Roland Emmerich seemed determined to get two more movies in the series up and running at some point down the road. Although Independence Day 2 will probably find its way to the big screen in the near future, the third installment is a different story.
The filmmaker explained to Empire:
“You have to set a release date otherwise another film moves into it. [But] ‘Independence Day’ is my next movie, if I get the right script. I should get the script pretty soon, then I’ll try to get it into good shape for one or two months, and if that happens, we’ll announce it and start production.”
When Roland Emmerich first discussed the Independence Day sequels, he said that both flicks would be shot back-to-back. Now it seems the studio is a little hesitant to put that much money into films that may not work at the box office.
The folks at 20th Century Fox could be waiting to see if Will Smith signs on for the projects. Although it was previously reported that the After Earth star wouldn’t return to the series, rumors suggest that he’s since had a change of heart.
Cinema Blend theorizes that Independence Day 2 could miss its July 3, 2015 release date. Since the boys and girls at Paramount Pictures decided to move Terminator 5 to July 1, 2015, many believe Emmerich might be forced to delay the sequel.
However, Emmerich hasn’t given up hope on ID4 3.
“We’ll only do the first part. Because we want to have the audience decide if they want to see the second, otherwise it feels arrogant. But I’m pretty confident, with the right script,” the filmmaker said about the third entry in the series.
