Super Ugly ‘Blobfish’ Named Mascot For Ugly Animal Preservation Society

The blobfish has won a public vote to become the official mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

The fish received its name because it’s a fish and it literally looks like a giant blob.

With its new mascot title the blobfish becomes the unofficial ugliest animal in the world.

Biologist and TV presenter Simon Watt, president of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, says the campaign is meant to draw attention to the threats facing some of the world’s most weird and wonderful creatures.

The Ugly Animal Preservation Society focuses on “aesthetically challenged” species that are currently threatened.

Other animals on the list include the huge-nosed prosboscis monkey, the pig-nosed turtle, the “scrotum frog” and pubic lice.

In the 1988 BBC One program Odd Noses of Borneo, Sir David Attenborough proclaims that, “Our traditional approach to conservation is egotistical… We only protect the animals that we relate to because they’re cute, like pandas. If extinction threats are as bad as they seem, then focusing just on very charismatic megafauna is completely missing the point… I have nothing against pandas, but they have their supporters. These species need help.”

It’s hard to tell what type of impact the society will have on ugly animal preservation but the blobfish managed to trend online after winning the competition.

You know an animal is ugly when it beats out the “scrotum frog” for the top spot on an ugly animal list.
