I-55 Bank Robber Caught? Andrew Maberry Surrenders To FBI

The I-55 bank robber has been caught.

Andrew Maberry, a 19-year-old teen from O’Fallon, Illinois, turned himself into the FBI today claiming that he is the I-55 Bandit.

The FBI is currently investigating the teenagers claim. BND reports that the teen has been charged with one of the bank robberies attributed to the I-55 bandit.

If Maberry really is the I-55 bank robber, he will also be charged with nine other bank robberies.

The FBI has been looking for the elusive bandit since May. Authorities believe that the I-55 Bandit robbed 10 banks in five different states over the last few months. The majority of the bank robberies occurred along Interstate 55 including four in St. Louis.

Earlier this week, the FBI sent out a notice asking for help identifying the I-55 bank robber.

The FBI writes: “The FBI is asking for the public’s help to identify the “I-55 Bandit.” Since May 6, 2013, he may have robbed 10 banks and attempted to rob two others in five states: Illinois, Missouri, Maryland, West Virginia, and Tennessee. In all the completed robberies, the subject used a demand note and implied he was armed. No one was physically injured. The amounts of money taken are not being disclosed.”

Dean C. Bryant, special agent in charge of the FBI St. Louis Division, said that digital billboards put up in affected cities, as well as tips from the public, directly led to Maberry’s arrest.

Bryant said: “We want to thank the news media and digital billboard companies for providing coverage on the I-55 Bandit. We have no doubt Maberry’s surrender was a direct result of the extensive media attention. We also appreciate the dozens of solid tips we were provided by the public. The FBI has long relied on the public to help identify and capture criminals.”

The FBI is still investigating the matter and could charge Maberry with nine more bank robberies.
