Serena Williams And Victoria Azarenka To Meet In U.S. Open Finals
Is anyone surprised that the two best tennis players in the world are meeting in the finals at the U.S. Open? Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka are set for a showdown during Sunday’s championship match.
And yes, if that sounds familiar, Williams and Azarenka faced each other in the finals last year too.
Williams got the better of Azarenka last year but things could be different this year. Williams has been dominant this year but Azarenka has been the one player that has been able to find a crack in the armor.
Williams has only lost four times this year and two of those matches came against Azarenka.
Williams said: “I’m excited to be in another final. We always have really good matches. Vika’s a great player and she lifts her game when it counts. I think that’s what makes the difference.”
Azarenka said: “I know her strengths, she knows my strengths… That’s what it’s all about, about those turning points, who wants it more, who’s willing to go for it more. It’s a bunch of combinations.”
Serena and Victoria will put on a show this Sunday but history is definitely in Williams corner. The world’s no. 1 player has made it the finals at the U.S. Open 7 times and she has won four of those Grand Slam championships. Azarenka, on the other hand, has never won the U.S. Open.
Azarenka said: “It’s been a long road to the final and it’s an amazing feeling to come out here and fight for that trophy on Sunday — I’m definitely giving myself the best chance for my dreams here.”
