San Francisco 49ers fire Mike Singletary

After a season full of QB changes and trouble amongst the San Francisco 49ers organization the team has fired Head Coach Mike Singletary. It is hard to imagine what is going on with this team, they lost their General Manger last year in the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft, and now they look to rebuild this organization with a new GM in place, who will get the chance to hire his own head coach. Singletray is now the 4th head man to lose his gig in the NFL this year.

At a lot of times this season Samurai Mike has looked over matched in his role as Head Coach. There were problems early in the year getting the offensive plays called in a timely manner, his has been unable to pick a QB and stick with that pick, and this team is in shambles. To be fair the front office is also in shambles and they handcuffed Mike with Alex Smith and traded away a reliable backup in Shaun Hill prior to the season.

Now the 49ers have to look towards the future. It seems the jury is in on Alex Smith and that this team will have to go back to the drawing boards in terms of a starting QB. That likely means using a draft pick next year’s draft to find a young QB and finding a veteran who can lead this team in the interim.

Of course this firing comes on a day when Singletary and QB Troy Smith got into a verbal altercation on the 49er sideline. The exchange was pretty ugly to watch with WR Ted Ginn Jr. trying to diffuse the situation. Really though sideline altercations will be what we remember most of the Singletary era of this team. Jim Tomsula will coach the team in week 17.
