Kyle Busch Wins In Atlanta, Secures Sprint Cup Chase Spot
Kyle Busch held off an aggressive Joey Logano to win his fourth Cup victory of the year on Sunday. Busch won at Atlanta Motor Speedway to claim his spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship for the first time in two years.
Speaking about his Sprint Cup berth, Busch said after the race:
“It’s a whole different situation than 365 days ago. We needed to prove to ourselves that we’re a championship contender.”
Before the race, Kyle Busch appeared on the radio where he complained about the performance of his No. 18 Toyota. Following his comments, his pit crew made some adjustments until the car handled like Busch wanted.
Towards the end of the race several caution flags were thrown, and Busch eventually emerged to beat Logano by.740 seconds.
Complimenting the changes made by his crew, Busch said:
“My boys on pit road. They’re amazing. I would do anything for them.”
The 28-year-old NASCAR superstar has won 16 races in the top three series this year. Busch also has nine victories in Nationwide and three in trucks.
Busch on Sunday claimed his 121st career victory in those series and has claimed 28 of them in Cup racing.
With his Cup birth in hand, Busch has now turned his attention to that elusive prize:
“The championship is number one on anybody’s list. You want to be the best in your realm of racing. I’m a NASCAR driver. I want to win a championship. I’ve yet to collect the big prize. One of these days it will happen. Maybe it’ll be 2013. Hopefully, it is.”
Finishing in third place in Atlanta was Martin Truex Jr. who was racing with a broken right wrist. Rounding out the top 5 were Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman.
