A baby in New Orleans was shot and killed this week while on a walk with her babysitter.
According to USA Today , 13 month old Londyn Samuels was in her babysitter’s arms on Thursday night when shots rang out on a New Orleans street. The baby was shot and killed. The 18-year-old babysitter was wounded and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Police have not identified the 18-year-old babysitter yet.
Officials said that two shots were fired and that both of them hit the babysitter in the back. The bullets continued through her body and then hit the child. Police do not know if the 18-year-old was the target of the attack.
Keion Reed, the little girl’s father, said : “She was my world, she was everything, she was my reason for getting up in the morning… My daughter didn’t do anything to him. Why did she have to die?”
Witnesses said that they spotted two men running from the scene after the shooting. The New Orleans Police department uncovered grainy surveillance footage showing a “person of interest” walking near the scene of the crime.
The NOPD has taken one man and one woman in for questioning.
New Orleans has battled crime and gun violence for years and Mayor Mitch Landrieu said that the NOPD is working to turn things around. Landrieu said: “When a young man kills a child in the arms of an 18-year-old, we have to take it to a new level.”
