Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ Is A ‘Warning’ To Men
Katy Perry’s new single “Dark Horse” shows a different side of the “Teenage Dream” singer.
The song, which is from her upcoming album, Prism, features rapper Juicy J.
“It’s kind of a juxtaposition,” she said. “It’s got me, a pop artist, with a little bit of an urban kind of hip-hop-flavored background soundtrack to it, and the lyrics are kind of witchy and dark, as if I was a witch warning this man not to fall in love with me, and if you do know I’m going to be your last.”
It may be one of the only songs like that on the album. Last year, Perry told L’Uomo Vogue it was “inevitable” that Prism would be “much darker” than her previous albums because of what she went through. She was referring to her divorce from Russell Brand, which was finalized in February, but didn’t go into effect until July following a mandatory six-month waiting period. She is now dating John Mayer (again) and recently said she’s had a change of heart since then.
“There’s not really any darkness on the record,” Perry said. “There’s definitely some textures and colors but I think I was saying that when I saw going through a different phase, but I really let that light in.”
She also said that she decided to name the album Prism because it reflected her ability to turn darkness into light.
“The reason why I called this record Prism is because I actually finally let the light in and then I was able to create all these songs that were inspired by letting the light in and doing some self-reflection and just kind of working on myself,” Perry said.
“I felt very prismatic because of that I feel like now I get to show these songs off and share these songs with the listeners and it’s almost like I get to beam the colors that I’ve experienced out from me,” she added.
Prism is set to be released October 22.
