Twerking Fans Rip Miley Cyrus To Shreds On Twitter

Twerking experts haven’t been incredibly kind to Miley Cyrus following her stint at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. You could go as far as to say they’ve been downright mean.

If you didn’t know what twerking meant before this week, then chances are you’re overly familiar with the dance now. However, fans of the booty-shaking fad aren’t exactly thrilled with the singer’s gyrations at the VMAs. Some have even pronounced the craze dead on arrival.

Those who aren’t familiar with twerking might be a little confused at this point. Although there are several definitions floating around the internet, the explanation found at Urban Dictionary is pretty much spot-on.

“The rhythmic gyrating of the lower fleshy extremities in a lascivious manner with the intent to elicit sexual arousal or laughter in ones intended audience,” the website explains.

Twerking reportedly began during the Miami Bass days back in the late 80s. However, others believe the term originated with the New Orleans bounce scene a few years later. Regardless of where it began, the dance appears to have finally crossed over into the mainstream.

Do a search for the word “twerk” on YouTube and you’ll get videos from girls around the planet attempting to shake their rumps to a plethora of different music. Some are pretty good while others literally fall flat on their faces.

Not surprisingly, a lot of people aren’t exactly thrilled with Miley Cyrus’ attempt to adopt the dance. Her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards didn’t settle well with quite a few folks, many of whom shared their displeasure on Twitter.
