Joss Whedon Talks ‘Avengers 2’ And $100 Million Payday Rumors
Joss Whedon has a lot to say about Avengers 2, the rumor that he got a $100 million payday, and where he gets his creativity from. Oh, and why Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is not part of the new Age of Ultron.
The interview will be published by Entertainment Weekly on August 23, but here are some of the highlights of what Whedon told EW.
First of, when it comes to Loki (who is adored by legions of Tom Hiddleston fans) not being part of the story the second time around, Whedon says that he enjoyed working with Hiddleston as he was the one actor he worked with more than any other.
“He was the only villain and there were six heroes. And he was as great as anyone I’ve ever worked with, and I get why people loved the character. But it’s an Avengers movie.”
As to the rumors that he got paid $100 million for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon confesses that they bothered him. He says it gives people an image of him that is not real. Yes, he is rich, but according to him, it’s not as much as that. Obviously he has the means to make a new movie, so he’s doing alright.
On the topic of his creativity and what he credits it to. Whedon says that when he was younger there was a rule that you couldn’t talk between breakfast and lunch, because his mom, who was a feminist, was writing.
“I spent a ton of time alone. I was raised by a feminist, I had a terrifying father, and oppressively scary and mean brothers. We had a farm. The rule was between breakfast and lunch you weren’t allowed to make a sound. ‘Quiet time’ is what we called it, because my mom was writing. So what are you doing? You’re either writing, or you’re eating, or you’re walking up and down your driveway creating giant science-fiction universes and various elaborate vengeance schemes upon your brothers. At our apartment in New York, I’d stay in my room and listen to (Star Wars composer) John Williams and make up stories.”
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2015.
