Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller has been suspended for six games after abusing the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. According to Miller, the suspension did not occur because of a positive drug test.
NFL officials originally sought a longer sentence but came to an agreement with NFLPA negotiators.
Miller’s suspension will begin on August 30, 2013, one day after the Bronco’s compete in their last preseason game. Miller will be eligible for return when the Bronco’s take on the Indianapolis Colts on October 20.
With a $2.3 million contract, Von Miller will lose $800,000 for his violation.
In a statement following his six-game suspension, Miller wrote, “although my suspension doesn’t result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violations of the rules.”
Von then adds:
“I made mistakes and my suspension has hurt my team, Broncos fans, and myself. I am especially sorry for the effect of my bad decisions on others. I will not make the same mistakes about adhering to the policy in the future. During my time off the field, I will work tirelessly and focus exclusively on remaining in peak shape. I look forward to contributing immediately upon my return to the field and bringing a championship back to the people of Denver.”
The NFL has a rule that specifically states NFL players must fully participate in all substance abuse policies. A player can violate the NFL’s rule by missing a test, tampering with tests, or diluting their urine sample during a test.
The Denver Bronco’s have stood beside Von Miller throughout pre-season training and pre-season play. The team operated as if Von would join them during the teams seasons opener on September 5.
According to Coach John Fox:
“Von has acknowledged making some mistakes in the past and is now being held accountable under the policies the league has in place. While it’s very disappointing that we will be without him for the start of the season, we will support him as a football team and organization. All of us will stand by Von and help him however possible as he continues his personal growth off the field.”
Von Miller will play in Sunday’s game when the Broncos take on the St. Louis Rams at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
Miller, the second pick of the 2011 draft is the best player on the Broncos defense and last seasons runner up for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Likely to take over until Miller’s return is Shaun Phillips, a 10-year veteran who signed a one-year free agent deal with the Broncos during the off-season.
Do you think the Denver Bronco’s defense will be okay with Von Miller gone for six games?
