One Direction: Simon Cowell Less Involved With The Band These Days
Although he had a hand in bringing the group together, Simon Cowell doesn’t spend too much time worrying about the guys in One Direction these days.
Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson opened up their world to documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock during the Take Me Home tour earlier this year. The end result is the upcoming big-screen endeavor This is Us. The movie hits theaters later this month.
Spurlock reportedly had complete access to One Direction while he was putting his documentary together. According to the director, Simon Cowell doesn’t spend a whole lot of time dictating what the group does. Since he’s busy with other things, Cowell has taken a more hands-off approach.
“I’m sure he chimes in every now and then, but they vote on every decision that’s made — they’ve become incredibly empowered when it comes to their career path, it’s like 1Democracy,” Morgan Spurlock recently told the Sunday Telegraph’s Seven magazine.
Just because Cowell isn’t micromanaging their every move doesn’t mean he is turning a blind eye to their behavior or success. One Direction is currently signed to his Syco record label, so the guy is still involved in some capacity.
The documentary filmmaker also stated that This is Us doesn’t focus on the massive amounts of cash the guys have generated through their songs, albums, tours, and merchandise. Spurlock said he was more interested in showcasing who these fellas are as people.
“We don’t talk about it, because for me it’s not the story — every band has merchandise. This film is about dreams and family,” the director explained.
TriStar and Sony Pictures are set to release This is Us into theaters across the US on August 30. If you’re thinking about taking in a showing of the flick, then be sure to prepare for possible fan overload.
