Princess Busted Over Cockfighting Ring
A princess was busted for hosting a cockfighting ring.
That might sound like something you would see in a Disney film, but it actually happened. Irina Walker, the daughter of the King and Queen of Romania, was among 18 participants arrested in a cockfighting ring in Oregon.
Cockfighting, a gambling activity which is illegal in the US, is where blades are attached to roosters’ feet in a pen, and two birds fight to the death. Spectators are charged admission, and food and drinks are sold over the spectacle.
Irina Walker’s husband, former Sheriff’s deputy John Walker, was also arrested as the cockfighting events were held on their farm at least ten times between April 2012 and April 2013, bringing in as much as $2,000 a day. The busted princess and her husband have been accused of hosting a cockfighting ring and illegal gambling close to Morrow County.
Federal prosecutors are looking into seizing the ranch, which is currently listed on the records as Stokes Landing Sport Horses, and there was no answer to phone calls made to the Walkers or their business on Friday.
Five different locations were raided on Thursday between Oregon and Washington, leading authorities to believe the organization is quite wide-spread. Agent in Charge Gary Drumheller stated about those arrested, “All these people know each other and it’s a weekly event for them during the fighting season.”
The Walkers’ ranch was found to contain several medicines and syringes used for cockfighting, and it is believed that they had been breeding the birds for the illegal sport under the supervision of Cecilio Mendosa Magana. Each bird went for $500 to $1,500, according to Gary Drumheller.
US attorney Amanda Marshall stated, “Cockfighting is illegal under federal law and under the laws of all 50 states. Besides being a barbaric practice, cockfighting jeopardizes public health and safety and facilitates the commission of other criminal acts.”
Cockfighting ringleader Cecilio Mendosa Magana of Kennewick has been charged with several counts of crimes against animals.
