Mark Wahlberg Wants To Play Iron Man After Robert Downey Jr
Mark Wahlberg has announced that he wants to replace Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark in the Iron Man franchise.
Wahlberg told Yahoo! Movies, while promoting his upcoming action movie 2 Guns, that he has his eyes on the leading role in the Marvel epic.
“I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey,” Wahlberg confirmed,” [but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked.”
Wahlberg then joked, “Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in Batman [Forever]. Somebody dodged a bullet!” However he admitted that he wouldn’t want to wear a costume, remarking, “I ain’t wearing no tights man.”
Wahlberg recently took over the Transformers film series from Shia LaBeouf, and he has currently been filming the upcoming blockbuster epic in Detroit.
Iron Man 3 was released earlier this summer, and it amassed $1.2 billion at the box office, making it the fifth highest grossing movie across the world. Downey Jr has since signed on to return as Stark in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, however it isn’t known if he plans to return in a stand alone Iron Man movie in the future.
Wahlberg also discussed 2 Guns with Yahoo, but he also then embarked on a rant about CGI movies as they are starkly different to his latest effort, which is a buddy cop action film.
Wahlberg stated, You know, there’s so many effects-driven movies. What people have a tendency to forget, because you look at a lot of the trailers and the summer movies that came out… they all look very similar. Certainly all the end of the world movies.”
He then added, “It’s like you can only do so much with effects. I don’t think any person sitting at home watching a television spot, a 15-second spot or a 30 second spot, is gonna say ‘Oh I’m gonna go see a movie because I haven’t seen that!’ You’ve seen it all before.”
Wahlberg concluded, “People haven’t been wowed by effects since Jurassic Park or Perfect Storm with the wave, you know? It’s like now everybody does everything. It’s all kind of the same s**t. They’re recycling a lot of the stuff.”
