Vin Diesel Opens Up About ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Role
Vin Diesel opened a huge can of worms when he posted an image of Groot on his Facebook page. Many wondered if the actor would voice the character in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Shortly after the image arrived, the Fast and Furious 6 star took it down. This caused the rumor mill to kick into overdrive. Did Marvel tell Diesel to take this picture down? Had the actor spoken too soon? It was enough to drive comic book nerds batty.
Instead of leaving everyone clamoring for more, Vin Diesel opened up about the role of Groot during a chat with the Los Angeles Times. When asked why he was interested in the part, the actor said he can essentially play whoever he wants.
“As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations,” Diesel explained.
He added, “So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.”
Diesel explained that he doesn’t have time to do a six-month role with Marvel at the moment. Since fans really wanted to see the two work together, he opted to voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. He also explained that Marvel wasn’t mad about dropping hints on his Facebook page.
“I’m pretty open, but I have been secretive about this. I went to Comic-Con and I got blasted while I was on the Hall H panel for Riddick. Someone asked a Marvel question. I couldn’t say anything because of that secrecy,” he explained.
