Florida A&M Names Trayvon Martin’s Dad An Honorary Captain
Trayvon Martin’s dad, Tracy Martin, has been named an honorary captain of the Florida A&M Rattlers on Sunday after he delivered a heart felt speech to the team.
Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, coach Earl Holmes said of Tracy:
“[We] talked and I told him I’d love him to talk to the team. He came out and he was very, very encouraging….”
Coach Holmes added
“[He] got a standing ovation from our guys. He talked about just persevering and told the guys to keep on pushing through the hard times. The message he shared with the kids was very positive and they were very responsive.”
The words spoken by Tracy Martin left the team “inspired,” and coach Holmes says Florida A&M will continue to support Martin and his foundation.
As an honorary captain, Tracy Martin is welcomed to join the team and watch games anytime he chooses throughout the 2013 college football season.
Speaking about Martin’s foundation, Holmes tells The Sentinel:
“I think what he’s doing with the foundation is big and it speaks volumes and I want the football team and FAMU Nation to be part of that.”
Following his son’s murder on February 26, 2012, Tracy Martin has worked endlessly to stop violence and end the lopsided and poorly thought out “Stand Your Ground” laws that currently exist in many states.
Whether or not politics should take a place in college football is a separate discussion. What is certain is that Martin’s presence with the team shows the huge outpouring of support he has received since his sons death.
Do you think Tracy Martin deserves to be an honorary coach for Texas A&M’s football team?
