Wes Welker On Bill Belichick: He Was Hard To Put Up With
Now that Wes Welker is out of New England the wide receiver is opening up about his relationship with Bill Belichick.
Welker, who will be playing for the Denver Broncos this year, said that it was hard to put up with his former coach.
Welker said: “It was just kind of hard… one of those deals where you have to endure him, put up with him…. But he does it to everybody. It’s the way he is.”
Belichick tried to rule New England with an iron fist and that wasn’t exactly Welker’s style. He put up with his coach for six seasons and became one of the most productive receivers in the NFL under Belichick’s thumb. Still, Welker is enjoying his freedom in Denver.
The wide receiver, who was once benched by Belichick after making a controversial remark during a press conference, said that he isn’t worried about anyone looking over his shoulder in Denver.
Welker said: “When I’m answering questions from the Denver media, I’m not worried about what the Broncos’ people are going to think,” Welker told SI. “I’m worried about what Belichick will think. Isn’t that crazy?”
Welker is happy to be out of New England and with a new team but it isn’t all smooth sailing just yet. The wide receiver said that he’s still trying to get onto the same page as Peyton Manning.
Welker said: “In New England, if the middle of the field was closed, I’d run a seam route… It’s something I’ve been doing for six years now, so I have to teach my brain to do it the way he’s [Manning] expecting me to do it.”
