Robbie Knievel Arrested For DUI While Driving Motor Home
Robbie Knievel, the son of the late Evel Knievel, was arrested for DUI in South Dakota this week.
Police said the 51-year-old was operating his motor home under the influence of alcohol. Knievel was arrested at 6:38 pm Tuesday outside of the Buffalo Chip campground. Buffalo Chip is a popular place to stay for people attending the Sturgis motorcycle rally.
A Buffalo Chip employee called police after witnesses reported that Knievel crashed into two other motor homes on the property. He broke a mirror and bumper on one of the RVs, but kept driving.
Police found Knievel’s RV idling in a nearby parking lot shortly afterward. Knievel was texting in the driver’s seat, and police said they detected a strong odor of alcohol. Knievel said he had three drinks earlier that evening. He took a breath test and blew a.228. The legal blood alcohol content level is.08.
Knievel also failed field sobriety tests, including two counting tests. Police said he was physically unable to perform the one-leg stand and walk-and-turn tests due to previous injuries.
Knievel was booked at a nearby jail, but was later released. His license has been suspended for 30 days, and he has been ordered to pay nearly $600 in fines.
Robbie Knievel has completed over 350 jumps, setting 20 world records. In 1989, he paid homage to his father by jumping the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Evel Knievel attempted the jump 22 years earlier in 1967, but failed to clear the fountains. His son became the first person to successfully make the jump, and said, “That was for you, Dad.”
Some of Knievel’s other jumps have included: 24 Coke Zero trucks at The Kings Island Amusement Park outside Cincinnati in 2008; 14 Greyhound buses (also at Kings Island); 21 Hummers at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth in 2008.
Robbie Knievel’s last jump was at the Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella, California, in October 2011. He jumped 150 feet over tractor trailer trucks.
