‘The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds’ Has A Dark Side

The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has a dark side.

The new game in the Zelda series, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, is due to hit the 3DS this November. It uses the same world as A Link To The Past, but it’s set additionally in the future, with a very different Link this time. This protagonist is probably a distant descendant of the original Link.

In the past, The Legend Of Zelda has always had a kind of dark side. There were dungeon rooms you couldn’t see your way through without a candle, the Stalfos were walking skeletons, and Ganon/Ganondorf was always acting on dark intentions, kidnapping Princess Zelda and imprisoning her in a room surrounded by dark forces. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is taking that dark side and making it a tad more obvious this time around.

To begin with, the title screen has not one, but two Triforces, the darker one looking almost like a shadow of the gold one on top. The dark Triforce exists in another world, possibly suggesting that you have to beat The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds in both worlds in order to set things right.

Link will travel between two worlds, as the title suggests, using his new ability to become paper thin and travel through cracks and along walls. The darker future world will look different and be populated by different enemies, and a “Merge” function in the gameplay HUD

suggests that you will be able to join the worlds to create certain effects that help you progress in one or both worlds. The dungeons themselves will be apparently linked between the worlds.

This isn’t the first time a game required travel between worlds, either. Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver also used puzzles which required traveling between worlds in order for Raziel to progress.

The main character in The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is an entirely different Link, and according to some in-game dialogue, the new Link is out to stop an evil wizard from freeing Ganon, suggesting a different villain this time as well.
