Drake Reveals That Kanye West Is His Favorite Artist
After Kanye West joined Drake onstage at OVO Fest, Drake told MTV News that “Kanye West is my favorite artist.” Despite the apparent rivalry between the two performers, Drake was shocked and extremely overjoyed when Kanye West stated that he was the main person currently pushing both himself and Jay Z creatively.
Many listeners had though that there was tension between the two artists but it turns out that it is was really just friendly competition which has pushed both Drake and Kanye to try and create better music. According to Drake:
I think me and Kanye have wanted to express our respect for each other for a long time and sometimes rap, the business, the competitiveness and just the heart behind it forces you to not talk to the people you quietly admire
Noah Shebib, one of the main producers on Drake’s album Take Care, had already tried to dispel any rumors suggesting that there were deep-rooted issues between Drake and Kanye West back in 2012.
Drake pulled out tons of artists during his performance at OVO but the most surprising guest was Kanye.
It seemed as though Drake had a hard time comprehending that his favorite artist would complement him in such a significant way. West attributed virtually the entire collaboration between himself and Jay Z on Watch The Throne to Drake.
Lyrics in Drake’s song I’m The One were originally taken as jabs against Kanye stating “I’m just feeling like the throne is for the taking.” Although those lyrics were likely eluding to Kanye, we now know that they were nothing more than friendly competition meant to serve as motivation for each other to do better.
Drake still looks up to Kanye and many others, according to his talk with MTV:
I still look at guys like ‘Ye and Jay and Wayne…I don’t really look at myself on that level…So to hear one of them say something–to hear anybody say something like that, let alone the guy that’s pretty much the reason why I started rapping, that was crazy.
