Justin Bieber’s Mom’s Concern Is Evident: ‘I Have To Talk To Him’ [Video]
For Justin Bieber’s mom, Pattie Mallette, these have to be difficult times.
Amid reports of a nightclub brawl that may or may not incriminate her son, the Nowhere But Up author who is currently on a book tour with a teen edition of that 2012 best seller, recently opened up to Extra TV host Mario Lopez about her only child.
The interview comes on the back of six months of fevered reporting and some bizarre on-and off-tour incidents involving Bieber.
Even though it’s clear some of the media’s coverage as far as balance, accuracy, and basic fact-checking goes has redefined bottom-feeding, it’s also true that some of Justin’s behavior — IQ notes some of the claims are alleged — has been deeply questionable.
Without specifically referring to the most recent of Justin’s exploits — urinating in a mop bucket in a New York City nightclub kitchen, spitting off a hotel balcony, a tour bus drug bust, and just days ago, clambering atop a SUV in a club parking lot while his bodyguards roughed up an aggressive male club-goer — Mallette’s concern in the interview was apparent.
Asked what she thought of her son’s behavior, the 37-year-old said:
“If it affects the world the way it is, imagine how I feel as a mom seeing these headlines.”
She continued: “I mean, I couldn’t have predicted the timing about all these headlines.”
“I’ve had this promo tour and this press tour booked. Some people think I’m out here doing the rounds talking about… addressing my son’s behavior.”
Perhaps echoing what many are thinking, the mother-of-one went on: “You know I just — I have to talk to him and have our conversations and it’s hard,” adding, “but really I’m out here to talk about my story and I know how much hope and inspiration it’s been bringing people. So, I couldn’t have predicted the timing of this.”
Probed further on their relationship, Mallette refused to share details of what she and Justin spoke about. However, she did reveal:
“We talk about the things that he is going through. We talk about the pressures that he’s under and what people are saying and how he feels about it and the questionable things that people are saying that he’s doing, his behaviors.”
“And we talk and he knows what I think,” she stressed, a little later adding: “I definitely am a mom first and I care deeply about what how he is feeling and what he is going through.”
Quizzed about Bieber’s friends — Lopez didn’t mention any by name but he clearly inferred buddies like rapper Lil Twist who was recently accused of battery, and was arrested for an alleged DUI in July — Mallette’s rueful smile and hesitation spoke volumes.
“I,” she smiled. “Well, I don’t know how to answer that question,” she said finally.
“Fair enough,” Lopez replied with a laugh. “Okay. You just did.”
Mallette previously told Bravo’s Watch What Happens: Live host Andy Cohen that she thought her son was getting a ” bad rap,” but also said she wasn’t “naive to think that my child is perfect and making all the best decisions of his life.”
Stressing the good that Bieber has accomplished while also sustaining a demanding career, she drew attention to the work he has done with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
The organization works with the parents or carers of terminally ill or very sick children and carries out their one “expressed wish.” In fact, Bieber has just become the biggest musician “wish granter” in Make-A-Wish’s 33-year history, carrying out over 200 “wishes” in the three years he has been involved with the Foundation.
Spoke to @justinbieber before he became the biggest #makeawish giver in music history & then made a family’s dream real with @TheEllenShow
